Congratulations To Fran Mannis On Winning
2nd Place in St. Louis Post-Dispatch Travel Competition!

Quotation From Post-Dispatch

"The second-place photo also benefitted from dramatic lighting, but Fran Mannis knew what to expect when she and her husband, Chuck, headed for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington in September.

"We went there knowing there was a full moon," said Mannis, who lives in Creve Coeur. "We got there in early evening. It was my first time ever at the wall, and it was an emotional experience."

Mannis' photo shows a row of lights reflecting in the wall, with the moon rising over the illuminated Washington Monument in the background. The shadowy figures of two disabled men, apparently vets visiting the wall, move up the walkway.

"The composition was amazing," Mannis said. "Sometimes, we get lucky."

Mannis credited her husband with teaching her how to use a camera. Chuck Mannis, a retired orthopedic surgeon, entered the photo contest last year and won an honorable mention. "We have a lot of his photographs around the house but none of mine," Mannis said. "We'll have to change that."

Features designer Reagan Branham, one of the judges, noted another appealing factor about the photo. "It's so American," she said."

Calendar of Future Events

Wednesday, February 3, 2010 - 7 PM

Program and Color Competition

• Meeting Location: Ethical Society, 9001 Clayton Road

• Program: Lines, Shapes and Structures
• Presenter: Michael Haggans

Michael Haggans is an architect and photographer. He is currently Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Kansas. During the 2009-10 academic year he is teaching and developing two courses: Planning and Design of the American Campus and What’s Next: The near past and future of architectural practice. He was the University Architect at the University of Missouri and the University of Arizona. In private practice, with HOK and Flad Architects he has worked with more than two dozen universities through out North America.

Michael began to take photography seriously during his architectural studies and later as his practice began, as a way to capture the significance of landscape and built form. His architectural photography has been used extensively by many of his professional colleagues. His most recent St. Louis photography show was at Northwest Coffee in Ladue, in celebration of Twelve Months at Northwest Coffee. The show was organized around images that were first displayed in the shop’s restroom. He continues to display new images each month.

He follows a discipline of taking at least one photograph a day and gives himself annual assignments. This year’s assignment is Circle, Triangle and Square. Past projects have included Green and Energy, Red and Yellow. His photography is inspired by Jim Brandenberg, best known for Chased by the Light, the artist Edward Hopper and by the fictional photographer Auggie Wren in the Paul Auster novella-based movie, Smoke.

Structure is the first element Michael sees, and only later the color. Whether it is the shape of the curve or the strength of the column, structure forms almost all of his images. Shadows are often the defining elements, but then there is a distinct color that brings it all into focus.
