Luc Dequick is a 44 old amateur photographer who joined a local camera club in 1980 and started to participate in PSA-recognized exhibitions in 1990.

Dequick primarily enters photojournalism competitions because he prefers to shoot sports. In the PJ
division he has earned his Master II ranking which means he has accumulated more than 1,500 acceptances from 300 images.

He has been listed in PSA Who's who of photography since 1990 as one of the top 25 exhibitors worldwide, coming first in already nine times. Luc has lectured extensively and judged in many Belgium and numerous international exhibitions.

Luc Dequick has the following to say about sports photography :

"Sport is a synonym for action. Therefore, the speed of the reaction and the thinking of the photographer are as important as the location. In addition to this, one has to prepare in advance for the subject that will be photographed, adjusting to the smallest alteration and think, therefore, about the needed ingredients of the photo: movement, speed and action. You also need lighting, sharpness and informative content, so the photo will express
originality and attract attention. I hope I have illustrated this vision with the images in this gallery."

The St. Louis Camera Club thanks Luc Dequick for sharing his photography, his thoughts and his techniques with us and the world.

Dequick's photography illustrates the importance of composition and color in award winning sports photography. His images verify the axiom that good PJ pictures need some combination of (1) color, (2) action and (3) human emotion and that award winners need all three qualities.

Each image has a little story about how and where the action was captured which adds interest as well as compliments our knowledge.

1. Skeleerfinish

Inline skating. There are several competitions in Belgium.

I prefer light but no sun because with the helmets, the shadows are a problem.

The best position is in the finish line.

I always use a 300mm lens – shutterspeed 1/2000 – F3,2

2. Speedway 5

It ‘s not so easy to make good shots because you need sun and dust.

The best position to photograph is in the first curve and you have to stay always higher than the track to eliminate the background.

Lens 300mm – shutterspeed 1/1000 – F4

3. Domina

I took this image in a stage against the time in the Tour de France.

The day before the stage I look for a good place to photograph. There we camp near the road (corn fields, vineyard) and have a barbecue in the evening.

Shutterspeed preference 1/60 – 1/100 sec. to have the motion effect in the background.
Lens 80-200mm – shutterspeed 1/100 – F10

4. Mormair - World cup competition of surfing.

It was difficult to obtain an accreditation but necessary because on the beach there was a cord which you couldn’t pass without accreditation. The cord was about 60 m from the edge of the sea.

At the waterline, there were about 30 photographers against each other so it’s always very difficult to move.

But for this last slide, I was in the water until my middle. Lens 300mm + extender 1,4 – shutterspeed 1/2500 – F8

5. 3925 & 4406

In wintertime it happens that you have extreme weather conditions during sports events like here in the cross.

The athletes here are facing the snowfall.

At these moments you may not hesitate to take as many shots as you can.

Lens 300mm – shutterspeed 1/1000 – F3,2

6. TGV

Last year, we went for a weekend to Austria in order to photograph dogsledge race.

The weather in Europe was very stable at that time and I looked on the internet where the races took place.

On the snow, I prefer a lot of sun, otherwise the snow is too pale. I look always for a place where I can manage that the background is blured.

Lens 300mm – shutterspeed 1/1000 – F8

7. MTB 32

Normally, each year there is a world cup race MTB in Belgium.

It becomes very difficult, there are about 20.000 spectators and they are walking on the track.

Also I was hiking a few hours to find a good place to take shots.

Each lap you are able to make a few shots. From time to time, you need some luck. The weather previsions weren’t good, but I had 15 minutes sunshine to make this picture of the rider in full action with mud on his face.

Lens 300mm- shutterspeeds 1/640 –F5

8. Fly 6

I really like to make shots of swimmers but once again, you need a lot of luck because there is only one good outdoor location in Belgium and there is only one competition day.

I try to have the right action moment in the finish line.

Lens 300mm – shutterspeed 1/1000-F6,3

I took about 500 m after the start was given.

Pfanmoller Stefan

An images of the world championship canoe and kayak in Bourg St. Maurice in the French Alpes.

The water is streaming with a speed of 25 m3/sec.

I needed to get an accreditation to get on the right side of the river otherwise photographing was impossible.

On the water, I prefer sunshine but photographing is possible only some hours a day because in summertime the sun is moving fast and you get no longer the desired light.

Lens 300mm – shutterspeed 1/1000 – F7,1.

Sunglasses

Three times I have been photographing “Alpine Ski”.

Here you need an accreditation to have the facility to mount with the elevators (ski lifts).

I do everything by foot because I can’t ski.

You have to search for a good and not so dangerous place.

At this moment, it becomes very difficult to get on the right places because FIS-responsibles have become very severe after the accidents of the past years.

Yit

In spite of the very cold temperatures
(- 15C) while photographing speed skating,
I enjoyed it very much.

The advantage of this low temperature was that the ice rink was permanently frozen and grey.

That gave soft reflections and light.

I took this slide standing on a ladder.
